Crazy Brave - Imagination

In Joy Harjo’s memoir, Crazy Brave, she talks about her ethnic background and her dreams and interests. While growing up in Oklahoma, she had an abusive stepfather and to stay in control of her life, she did many things.

Joy Harjo had many difficulties in her life, for example, her abusive stepfather. For her to be able to get away from all the hateful things happening to her and around her, she wrote poetry and music at an Indian Arts boarding school. Writing music and poetry made her able to express how she felt and she was able to tell her story through them. It makes her get things off her chest and gives her less thoughts to contain in her head. She also painted at the Indian Arts boarding school. While painting, she was able to live in a world of her own and set everything else aside. Her worries would vanish when she was into her works of painting or writing. She has her mind off the real world. Doing things like painting or writing helped her with her struggles as a single mother as a teenager. She was able to find her own voice and get through all the hardships ahead of her.

  1. Yeah, the value of imagination that Joy Harjo has. Things of arts helped her continue on with her life. Kind of like the art takes away the stress she has inside of her.
